Periodontal Gum Disease Treated in Windsor
Periodontal Therapy is offered at both our Windsor and Kingsville dental offices. It’s a gum disease that affects as many as three quarters of the adult population. Many people do not even realize they suffer from this dental problem. Also known as periodontal disease, it is the largest cause of tooth loss.
Plaque is a thin, colourless film of bacteria that adheres to your teeth and ultimately causes decay. We keep our teeth healthy and disease free by brushing them. However, when plaque develops below the gum line, no amount of tooth brushing can remove this bacterial build-up.
When a plaque build-up is not removed, over time, it hardens and becomes tartar. This porous mineral substance excretes toxins which decay the teeth, inflames the gums and pushes the gum tissue away from the surface of the tooth.
Symptoms of gum disease include:
- Red, tender gums
- Bleeding gums
- Receding gums
- Loosening teeth
- Chronic bad breath
If gum disease goes untreated, it can lead to diabetic complications and other serious health problems such as heart disease, osteoporosis, and stroke. There are even bigger risks if you smoke, have poor nutritional habits or are under a lot of stress.
Periodontal therapy treats gum disease by removing the plaque and tartar build-up in a way that cannot be accomplished with a toothbrush. Gum disease is easily avoidable with proper dental hygiene. However, if gum disease does develop, it is fairly easy to treat and reverse the effects, leaving you with a smile that looks and feels healthier.
